Lighting for Life

Are you curious about how to use flash in your photography? You are not alone! Having a basic understanding of lighting provides a firm base for proper exposure when shooting, whether ambient or flash. This workshop will get you up and running quickly to create the lighting needed in telling your story through images.

In this hands-on class, Robert will lead you down the path of not only understanding light, but also how to apply the traits of light to create stunning images previously only seen in your mind’s eye. Quickly grow in knowledge over this 8 hour class and with plenty of opportunities to shoot to reinforce knowledge with skill.

Starting the day will be an in-depth explanation and demo of how all light behaves, regardless of what might be available on location or light crafted in the studio. Robert will demo each trait of light tethered to a computer so you can compare the difference between what your eyes see and the camera captures. Having a firm grasp of these light elements will help you see light as a photographer and better understand the dance between shadows and highlights.

Robert will move into describing the basic modifiers you might use to shape the light and bend it to your will in the creation of the best images. We will cover a wide range of softboxes, scrims, reflectors and creative filters. Everyone will be able to use their camera to shoot the model under the different light shapers to build a light pattern catalog.

Next on the list will be learning some of the lighting positions for portraits, from the classic Rembrandt to butterfly glamour to dramatic athlete multipoint lighting for easy action composites. At this point, a whole new world of creative light sculpting will become clearer and your knowledge will be solidified through several hands-on practical applications with the models.

There is always a gap between knowledge, understanding and skill. We hope this all-day class helps bridge the difference helping you become the skilled photographer you wish to be in any genre. Attendees should have a solid understanding of their camera basic functions and the exposure triangle. Please attend with your camera body, a normal perspective lens (full frame: 50mm / crop frame: 35mm) or equivalent zoom.

Robert is a Westcott Top Pro and will be featuring the full line of the FJ lighting system and modifiers. The FJ system uses a universal trigger for use all most camera brands for easy adjustment.

For maximum benefit to the students and to allow for sufficient interaction time between the photographers and models, we are limited this class to 10 attendees. Students are expected to have an understanding of exposure and their camera controls. If needed, a camera control and exposure class can be scheduled.
